The 59-year old poet, Rivka Miriam has had a tremendous amount of influence from her parents, who were both Holocaust survivors; especially from her father, Leib Rochman, a well-known Yiddish writer. Rivka began writing poetry at the age of seven, and at the impressive young age of fourteen had her first collection of poetry published. Her first published poetry book, My Yellow Dress, revolved around Rivka’s prominent writing themes which consisted of her sense of identity as a woman, traditions, and the Holocaust. Since then, she has had continued success with her 12 books of poetry, 2 collections of short stories, and 2 books for children published. Much of her work reflects her thoughts and reflections on having a family who has survived the Holocaust. Although she does not directly write about the Holocaust, the context of her poetry strongly portrays the subject. Similar to poetry by Oded Peled and Esther Fuchs who was also part of a family of Holocaust survivors, her writing reveals a glimpse into her view into a generation that has surfaced from the obliteration of the Holocaust. The backbone of her creative and intellectual poetry and other works, however, reveals Rivka’s sense of identity as a Jewish woman.
Both of Rivka Miriam’s shows in Jerusalem, one on July 28th and one on September 6th, will incorporate 22 of her creative and contemporary poems through an exhilarating musical performance. The shows bring to life Rivka’s poems, through the well-known performers Rali Margalit, cellist-composer, Baruch Brenner, actor-narrator-vocalist, Ora Boasson-Horev, double bassist, Yaakov Meron, wind instrument player, and Yoni Sharon, percussionist.
