While traveling in Israel, Capernaum is a great place to visit as it is a home to many unique archaeological treasures. Discovering numerous Capernaum finds, Dr. Wayne Stiles is most impressed with the ancient synagogue which was built about 200 years ago. Closely located towards the Jordan River, about two miles west, Capernaum is known as the main location for the events that took place during the life of Jesus.

Capernaum, also known as the “Town of Jesus,” is a small city on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee and served as both an important stopping point between northern Syria and southern Egypt and a beneficial fishing village. This long road in Israel was a crucial communication tool, as news could easily be traveled twenty miles in one day. Furthermore, Capernaum was the home-base for Jesus ministry and as referenced in the Bible was the city where He was to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah. Dr. Wayne Stiles, an experienced conference speaker and ordained minister, has conducted detailed research on the various lands of the Bible, including Capernaum.

While visiting the city of Capernaum, enjoy the beautiful synagogues built from white limestone, which were an important part of Jesus teachings. Stop and take time to enjoy the view over the grand wall that divides the prayer hall and the eastern courtyard within the synagogue. Within the courtyard, notice fragments being displayed of the synagogue, which include white industrial stones used for farming in the ancient times. Make sure to take notice of the impressive architecture inside the walls of the synagogue, such as the ark of covenant, a unique element within the structure. The interior U-shaped seats that you will notice on the way out are typical of this type of building.

Travel on to the Byzantine ruins of the village which are located next to the famous Greek Orthodox Church. The Byzantine church was built on a raised level above the House of Peter. Arranged in an octagonal structure, the building is a must see archaeological treasure within Capernaum. The black basalt stones used to build this part of the village are a great contrast to the white walls of the synagogue. Complete your day by the water where many of the old fishing boats would have pulled in after a long’s day of fishing.
